Games and PE

Sport and exercise play an important part in the lives of all Swanbourne House pupils from the time many of them join us in the Nursery to the time they leave at the age of 13. Our philosophy for sport at Swanbourne is “To provide an enjoyable environment in a wide variety of activities, that allows all children to develop an interest and enthusiasm for physical activities, along with a high level of skill and understanding relative to their individual potential”.

Children in the 4s have a lesson of PE each week with an additional swimming lesson every week in the Summer Term. In the 5s the children have a PE lesson, a games lesson and a swimming lesson each week. These lessons are led by qualified PE teachers or our Games Coaches. Tennis coaching is also offered as an extra-curricular activity for the 5s and above.

In their PE and games lessons pupils are taught to:

•    Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination and begin to apply these in a range of activities.
•    Participate in team games; develop simple tactics for attacking and defending.
•    Perform dances using simple movement patterns.

This is done through a range of activities including football, netball, basketball, mini tennis, athletics, SAQ exercises (speed, agility and quickness), gymnastics, dance and swimming. The level of competitiveness increases as the children get older and is dependent on the nature of the activity. The Pre-Prep make good use of the facilities up at the Prep school and the children’s learning is accelerated through having lessons with the Prep staff; it also prepares them for the full and demanding programme of sport at the Prep school.
