A Day of Artistic Discovery

Art

Our Art Scholars recently enjoyed a fantastic day exploring some of London’s most celebrated galleries, spending time sketching, discussing and gathering inspiration for their own creative work.

The day began at the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square, where pupils explored a carefully selected range of masterpieces by renowned artists including Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Scholars focused on observing individual works in depth, completing sketchbook activities and taking time to study the techniques, compositions and details that make these paintings so enduringly influential.

From there, the group walked along the Strand to Somerset House, one of London’s leading arts and cultural centres, before visiting The Courtauld Gallery. Home to an exceptional collection spanning the Renaissance through to the twentieth century, the gallery offered pupils the opportunity to experience a diverse range of artistic styles and movements. They also explored Modern Painting from the Courtauld and Reuben Collections and viewed a contemporary site-specific commission by artist Ella Walker.

Seeing artwork firsthand is such an important part of our Art Mentoring programme. Experiencing the true scale, colour, texture and detail of original works helps pupils develop their observational skills, confidence and creative thinking in a way that reproductions simply cannot.

The visit sparked thoughtful conversations about artistic approaches, techniques and interpretation, encouraging pupils to look more closely and think more deeply about how artists communicate ideas through their work. It also provided plenty of inspiration for their own artistic journeys, with sketchbooks filled with ideas to take back to the studio.

A brilliant day of looking, learning and feeling inspired, and a wonderful opportunity for our scholars to immerse themselves in the world of art beyond the classroom.
