‘Becoming an Ironman’

A huge thank you to Mr Paul Burton-Pye, our Director of Sport at Swanbourne House, for his inspirational start of term lecture  ‘Becoming an Ironman’.

An Ironman Triathlon consists of a 2.4 mile (3.86 km) swim, a 112 mile (180.25 km) bicycle ride and a marathon 26.22-mile (42.20 km) run, raced in that order. The children loved hearing about the determination needed to complete such a gruelling endeavour as the Ironman Triathlon along with the 30 week training programme and 20 hours training needed per week to ensure peak fitness levels before taking part.

The three things you will need to complete an Ironman:

  • Physical Ability
  • Mental Ability
  • Support from your family and friends

In the lecture, Mr Burton-Pye demonstrated the different equipment needed for the three disciplines; Swimming, Cycling and Running, and showed the importance of some types of kit over others.
