Prep Schools’ Music Day at Oakham School

On Thursday the Senior Vocal Group and some of our 11s internal music scholars travelled to Oakham for their Prep Schools’ Music Day, this year with the theme of ‘The Best of Broadway’.

After delicious muffins on arrival (received with huge excitement after a long trip), the singers joined a massed rehearsal of over 100 voices from many prep schools. Directed by Oakham’s hugely enthusiastic and energetic Director of Music, Mr Peter Davis, the children worked on songs from a history of musical theatre, with everything from West Side Story to Matilda and Wicked featuring in the exciting programme. After a delicious cooked lunch, and an afternoon’s rehearsal, the orchestra and choirs came together to put on a superb concert in the stunning surroundings of Oakham’s Chapel. The finale of You’ll Never Walk Alone, with its romantic melody and poignant words, has undeniably become an anthem of our time (whether or not you support Liverpool FC!), and sent us on our way after a wonderful day’s music-making with so many brilliant musical memories made.

“I was expecting the children to be quiet on the way home, after a hard day’s work, but the singing continued in the minibus! My thanks to the brilliant Oakham music team of staff, together with of course our very own pupils who worked so hard all day long and represented Swanbourne House in the very best way.”                                                          Mr M Philips, Director of Music
