Geography, History and Religious Studies are taught within our Humanities faculty. Knowledge and key skills are learnt in context through varied and exciting projects the pupils undertake each term.
The study of Humanities provokes pupils to ask questions about their relationship with the environment, local area and with other cultures and faiths around the globe.

At Swanbourne we bring the curriculum to life by venturing out to take part in ‘hands on’ experiences, some of these include trips to local rivers, Jaguar Land Rover, Kew Gardens, The Jurassic Coast, the Eco-Mosque in Cambridge and Warwick Castle. We also take part in many Humanities competitions, quizzes and debates and pupils carry out their own independent research at every opportunity. In school, we make models and plan mini-art projects; we make full use of ICT and online resources for research; engage in role-play; and use the amazing 55 acres of school grounds to enrich our learning. Many of the learning experiences are celebrated in Assembly or Chapel.

“Pupils are encouraged to look at and compare actions of the past as against our society today. Such questions, and the varying interpretations of their answers, play an important role in the spiritual, moral and cultural development of our pupils.”  Mrs K Markey, Head of Humanities

We have a fabulous team of innovative, creative and passionate subject teachers who deliver the curriculum to an exceptionally high level. The Head of Humanities liaises with the department teachers to monitor, evaluate and refresh topics on an annual basis. A topic overview ensures that there is a rich and wide coverage of knowledge and skills taught throughout the School. Pupils are given opportunities to review and make progress with the competencies of each subject area, which include areas such as chronology in History and mapping skills in Geography. Individual subject teachers make formative and interim assessments of the pupils in the class. Each term the progress of pupils is monitored by end of topic assessment tasks that help to inform the teachers and Head of Department of achievement levels and progression throughout each year group and topic area.
